Tangent Municipal Flag Design Process

The City of Tangent has launched a public flag design process. Several cities in Oregon have city flags, including Portland (top-center row), Albany, and Corvallis. The design process has a tentative schedule for accepting public applications during September and October. November, the Flag Design Committee will meet to review submissions and forward designs to the public for a vote. A public town hall will be held for the public to vote on their favorite design. The goal is for the city council to adopt a new city flag by January.
Who Can Submit A Design?
Anyone can submit a design from any neighborhood, city, state, or country. We welcome all artists to submit an entry before October 31, 11:59 PM.
What Designs Should Be Considered?
We recommend using the "Good" Flag, "Bad" Flag, and " How to Design a Great Flag" by the North American Vexillological Association. Also, some historic facts that make Tangent unique that could be incorporated:
The Calapooia tribe settled in the valley.
The railroad was named Tangent because it was the only stop in a straight 20-mile stretch of track.
The community was established in 1871
A cow caused the great train derailment of 1900
1/3 of Tangent burned down in 1939
Farming became Tangent's primary economic driver.
The Tangent Harvest Festival is the largest annual event.
Tangent Rural Fire Department, established in 1958, has a strong connection with the community.
Tangent became a city in 1973
The city used to pay rent to Kitty Kat, a cat that owned City Hall, and had a caretaker and attorney for the estate.
Kitty Kat passed away in 1995, and the city inherited City Hall.
Tangent is the "grass seed capital of the world," as grass from Tangent is used worldwide, including in NFL and World Cup stadiums.
Tangent has the motto "Endless Stories"
Tangent became a Tree City in 2023
Tangent became a Bee City in 2025
The combine demolition derby hosted by Tangent Together draws the largest crowd annually.
Where Do I Submit A Design?
You don't have to use the template, but do keep it within an 8x11 paper size.
Any design submitted to the City of Tangent becomes public domain and may be used for
free by the city or any member of the public. Designs may be modified or combined with
other designs without the consent of the artist

What Happens if My Design Is Used?
If your design is chosen or part of it is incorporated into the official flag, you will receive a copy of the ordinance adopting the new flag, a copy of the new municipal flag, and a gift card for either of the two restaurants in Tangent.
Flag Design Committee
The Flag Design Committee is a volunteer committee of five people and two liaisons. The committee will meet to go over the submitted designs. The committee may modify, combine, and advance designs to the public voting round. The committee will meet one Saturday in November to review designs. The potential dates are listed below.

To be considered for the committee, please fill out the application below. Any resident or business owner whose primary business location is in Tangent may apply. The City Council will confirm the committee in September.
